The most important results: Our results show that 74% of Basra residents treat themselves with antibiotics The study concluded that the prevalence of antibiotic self-treatment in the Basra community was relatively high and that the majority of cases in which people seek self-treatment with antibiotics are tonsillitis/pharyngitis and the most common antibiotic for self-treatment is amoxicillin. . The results indicate that antibiotics are usually provided over the counter in Basra, where these sales are illegal. Overuse of antibiotics may lead to the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. Our findings highlight the need to enforce laws that limit the availability of over-the-counter antibiotics in public pharmacies.
