Scientific Seminar at Al-Zahraa College of Medicine: "Psychoactive Substances Between Medical Use, Misuse, and Addiction"

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Basrah, Professor Dr. Muhannad Jawad Kazem, and under the supervision of the Dean of Al-Zahraa College of Medicine, Assistant Professor Dr. Jawad Ramadan Fadhel, with the presence of the Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs, Lecturer Dr. Ihsan Mardan Hammoud, Al-Zahraa College of Medicine organized a scientific seminar entitled:
"Psychoactive Substances Between Medical Use, Misuse, and Addiction", held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the Scientific Activities Hall of the college.

The seminar was organized in cooperation with the Educational Guidance Unit and the Department of Pharmacology, and in coordination with the Center for Development and Continuing Education and the Continuing Education Unit. It aimed to raise scientific and medical awareness among students and academic staff regarding the topic of psychoactive substances, which is considered a critical health and social issue.

The seminar was moderated by Dr. Shaimaa Fadhel Abbas, and featured Lecturer Dohaa Imad Omran as the speaker. The presentations addressed the scientific and medical aspects of psychoactive substance use, highlighting the distinction between regulated therapeutic use and cases of misuse that may lead to addiction. The seminar also shed light on the psychological and physical consequences associated with such misuse.

The event witnessed a wide attendance from students and faculty members, who expressed great interest in the topics discussed. They emphasized the importance of such activities in promoting health awareness and preventing the risks associated with the misuse of drugs and substances affecting the nervous system.

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants stressed the need to intensify educational and awareness efforts within the university environment and to activate the role of academic and medical guidance in combating addiction, thereby contributing to the creation of a safe and healthy academic community.
