Al-Zahra College of Medicine at Basra University organized a lecture on “Myelomeningocele” last Wednesday. The lecture aimed to shed light on the causes and factors leading to this disease, as myelomeningocele is a congenital defect that occurs when the neural tube fails to close completely during fetal development, leading to the spinal cord and meninges protruding from the open vertebra. During the lecture, he explained the impact of this condition on The nervous system of children, in addition to discussing the latest diagnostic and treatment methods available.
The lecture, which was lectured by lecturer Dr. Zainab Abdel Mohsen, included a detailed explanation of the pathological anatomy of the condition, potential genetic and environmental factors, in addition to the latest developments in surgical and non-surgical treatment. Clinical cases and recent scientific studies were also reviewed to support discussion and exchange of experiences among attendees.
A lecture recommended the need to increase awareness about this disease, the importance of early detection to improve treatment results, and encourage scientific research in this field to develop new and effective treatment methods.
The Dean of Al-Zahraa College of Medicine, Professor Dr. Mazen Hawaz Abdel Redha, the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Jawad Ramadan Fadl, and the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Professor Dr. Haitham Hussein Al-Moumen, in addition to an elite group of professors from the Faculty of Medicine at Al-Zahra University, attended the session.
