Al-Zahraa College of Medicine at the University of Basrah organized a workshop for sixth-year students on effective communication skills as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance students' communication abilities. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Mustafa Emad Imran and Dr. Qutaiba Muslim Dawood, focusing on the fundamentals of communicating with patients and their families in challenging situations, such as dealing with anger or dissatisfaction, and how to deliver negative diagnostic results to patients.
The workshop aimed to enhance communication skills between students and patients, enabling them to handle difficult situations professionally and humanely. Students were trained on building a positive relationship with patients through active listening, appropriate body language, and using a suitable tone of voice. The focus was also on maintaining calm and empathy when dealing with angry patients and redirecting anger toward positive outcomes.
The workshop included role-playing of real-life scenarios to train students on handling sensitive situations, as well as group discussions and immediate feedback from the trainers. This workshop provided a valuable opportunity for students to develop their communication skills, which will enhance their ability to interact effectively and empathetically with patients throughout their medical careers.
