Al-Zahraa College of Medicine Continues Its Support for Scientific Research: Master's Thesis Discussion on Preoperative Radiological Evaluation for Tibial Fracture Treatment

As part of its ongoing efforts to advance medical education and scientific research in service of humanity and society, Assistant Professor Dr. Faleh Waheed Hashem, faculty member at Al-Zahraa College of Medicine, participated as a member of the discussion committee for a master's thesis at the Department of Surgery – College of Medicine, University of Basrah. The session was held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Basrah Teaching Hospital.

Thesis Title:
"Preoperative Radiological Evaluation of Tibial Nail Length and Diameter"
(Arabic: التقييم الشعاعي قبل العملية لطول وقطر السيخ المستخدم في عظم القصبة)

Researcher:
Dr. Khalid Jamal Nabd

Study Summary:

This cross-sectional study was conducted in hospitals across Basrah Province from June 2024 to June 2025, involving 60 patients with isolated tibial shaft fractures. Preoperative radiological measurements were recorded for the unaffected limb to determine the appropriate nail length and diameter for surgical fixation.

The researcher employed paired t-tests to compare lengths and Wilcoxon tests to compare diameters. Measurement accuracy was assessed within margins of ±10 mm and ±5 mm for length, and ±5.0 mm for diameter.

Key Findings:

- The study demonstrated that radiological and anthropometric measurements, particularly the distance between the tibial tuberosity and the joint line (JL-TT), can reliably estimate tibial nail length preoperatively.
- This preoperative estimation contributes to reducing operative time, minimizing intraoperative adjustments, and enhancing surgical efficiency and safety.
- Standardizing preoperative evaluation methods is a crucial step toward improving outcomes in tibial fracture management.

Recognition of Al-Zahraa College of Medicine's Role:
